Cursor launches GitHub rival amid platform outages
AI coding startup Cursor has launched Origin, a new code-hosting platform offering developers an alternative to GitHub. The platform supports collaborative coding, pull requests, and repository storage, with "agent native" AI features planned. Notably, Origin is designed to work alongside GitHub, not replace it, allowing code to sync between both platforms.
The launch comes as GitHub faces mounting reliability issues, including a six-hour worldwide outage on the same day Origin debuted and 257 outages over the past year. Despite growing user frustration, Cursor faces a steep challenge competing with GitHub's 180 million developers worldwide.
