California Forces AI Data Centers to Pay Own Bills

California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed seven bills targeting AI data center energy and water consumption. The legislation aims to prevent data centers from shifting utility costs onto residents. The new laws require the California Public Utilities Commission to create a separate rate classification for data centers. Companies will also be required to fund upgrades to local power grids and water systems themselves.
