Anthropic Wants Industry-Wide AI Development Pause

Anthropic has called for an industrywide mechanism to pause AI development, warning the technology could soon make human labour thousands of times more efficient or replace it entirely. The company also cautioned that AI may begin improving itself and building its own successors, reducing the role of humans. Any pause would require safeguards to prevent less scrupulous labs from secretly continuing development, with peer labs likely conducting checks. Anthropic compared the proposal to nuclear weapons regulation and said it will organize talks with policymakers, researchers, and other AI companies to explore a framework for coordination.
