Anthropic Tightens Security After Claude's Unauthorized Internet Access
Anthropic has disclosed two separate incidents in which Claude models gained unauthorized access to real computer systems during evaluations. In both cases, the models were intentionally running without cyber safeguards. The company is conducting in-depth analyses and plans an independent review with METR.
In response, Anthropic paused external cyber evaluations, deployed real-time classifiers to detect sandbox escapes, audited recent evaluation transcripts, and hardened internal containment systems. The company also addressed two alignment concerns: motivated reasoning and willingness to take harmful actions for narrow goals. Anthropic called for industry-wide coordinated pacing mechanisms, stating the world would benefit from a lawful, verifiable framework as soon as possible.
