Anthropic, Nvidia Oppose Blanket Open-Weight AI Bans
Anthropic and Nvidia are pushing back against potential blanket bans on open-weight AI models as the U.S. government debates new AI regulations. Both companies argue regulators should target specific risks and misuse rather than restrict open-weight models broadly.
Anthropics CEO Dario Amodei called open-weight models without dangerous capabilities a public good, urging focus on controlling AI hardware exports, industrial-scale distillation and safety testing. Nvidia joined an open letter signed by IBM, Microsoft, Meta and others defending open-weight models as essential for innovation, competition and national sovereignty.
Both companies protect their core business interests while dressing self-preservation as principled policy advocacy.
