Anthropic grants METR researchers employee-level access
Anthropic is giving six researchers from AI safety nonprofit METR employee-level access to independently assess its models, safety practices, and risk management. The arrangement includes company laptops, office space, and access to internal tools comparable to Anthropic's own risk teams. METR can publish its findings without Anthropic's approval, though Anthropic can require redactions in narrow pre-defined categories. METR sits atop a three-tier evaluator system Anthropic is building. The move fulfills a pledge by CEO Dario Amodei and aligns with a White House accord signed by Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, Meta, Nvidia, and xAI committing to independent review.
The move follows Amodei's September proposal; OpenAI and other large AI firms have since pledged independent review.
