AI Models Crack Long-Unsolved Enigma Codes
OpenAI's Astra and Anthropic's Claude Opus 5 have each decoded separate Enigma messages that had stumped researchers for decades. Astra autonomously conducted archival research, built an Enigma simulator, and cracked a message unsolved since 2005, a feat veteran cryptanalyst Frode Weierud said left him in awe. Separately, cybersecurity executive Jack Willis guided Claude Opus 5 to break another message using an officer's known signature.
Weierud confirmed both solutions and noted that what Astra accomplished in two days would have taken a human researcher weeks or months. Only seven unbroken Enigma messages now remain, along with one where the plaintext is known but the key settings are not.
