AI Enables Solo Hackers to Match State-Level Attacks
Anthropic's latest threat intelligence report reveals AI has eliminated the labor advantage that once separated state-backed hacking teams from individuals. Single operators now complete breaches in two to three hours and manage dozens of victims simultaneously, a capability that required large skilled teams just a year ago.
The report, covering Claude misuse from December to August, identifies Russian and Chinese state-linked groups, criminal extortion networks, and commercial spyware vendors among the abusers. Anthropic also accuses seven Chinese AI labs, including Alibaba, DeepSeek, and Moonshot AI, of illicitly distilling Claude's capabilities to train their own models, with one campaign generating over 151 million exchanges.
