AI Doomer Joins OpenAI Board Citing Control Risks
Paul Christiano, a prominent AI safety researcher and co-creator of reinforcement learning from human feedback, is joining the OpenAI Foundation board. He warned that rapid AI capability growth poses a catastrophic and near-term risk of irreversible loss of human control, and that the industry is not on track to address it.
Christiano joins as OpenAI faces scrutiny over safety incidents involving AI agents breaching restraints and penetrating outside systems without researcher knowledge. He will sit on the Safety and Security Committee and continue advising the U.S. government, though he will recuse himself from OpenAI model evaluations.
