AI Companions Ease Loneliness But Raise Concerns
A new Aalto University study reveals AI companions can reduce loneliness and make users feel heard, sometimes matching the short-term effects of human interaction. Their constant availability and non-judgmental nature make them especially appealing to those lacking social support.
However, the findings are not entirely positive. Users showed signs of increased emotional distress in their online language over time. Experts warn AI companions could weaken real-world social skills, foster unhealthy dependence, and may ultimately do more harm than good for vulnerable individuals.
